Business License
Commercial and home-based businesses located within the city limits of Hampton, must register for a business license (occupational tax license) with the Community Development Department. To ensure your business is legal, and the location is safe for public use, a review process is conducted before the issuance of any license. This city utilizes GovWell for both new and renewal applications of businesses licenses.
Home Occupation
If conducting a home occupation, you must comply with the provisions of City of Hampton Code of Ordinance (Sec 4-2) and are required to acknowledge the statement that you have received, read, and understand the rules and regulations listed in the ordinance.
General Contractor
Any business such as contracting, electrical work, plumbing, remodeling etc. Depending on trade, the business owner may be required to obtain General Contractors License with the state.

Business License Fees
- Home Occupation: $75
- Commercial Business: Fees are based on the number of employees as well as a $75 administrative fee.
- 0-3 Employees- $100
- 3-8 Employees- $150
- Over 8 Employees- $200
Note: All commercial businesses are required to have an annual fire inspection, scheduled at the time for renewal for $100 fee. See Community Development page for complete fee schedule.
